Garciaparra’s 85th RBI Ties Record

Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra drove in two runs in a 10-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, giving him 85 RBIs and tying Harvey Kuenn’s major league record for leadoff hitters.

“I don’t even know when I break stuff,” said Garciaparra, who already holds records for homers by a rookie shortstop and had an AL rookie record 30-game hitting streak. “I don’t know my numbers, don’t like hearing about them.”

Garciaparra had an RBI double in the third and a solo home run in the eighth.

Matt Williams hit his 30th home run for the Cleveland Indians, his fifth 30-homer season and first since 1994, when he hit 43 in only 112 games. Williams joined Jim Thome and David Justice to give the Indians three players with 30 homers for the third time in their history. Cleveland also did it in 1987 and ’96.

It is the 14th time an AL team has had three 30-homer players.

Toronto third baseman Ed Sprague will have surgery Tuesday to repair the torn labrum in his right shoulder. His rehabilitation is expected to take four to six months. . . .
