A gunman opened fire early Sunday at a birthday party for Orlando Magic forward Dennis Scott at a hotel ballroom in Tysons Corner, Va., leaving two people seriously wounded.

The shooting occurred at the Sheraton Premiere Hotel near Washington, D.C., after the ballroom filled to capacity with 1,000 partygoers and was closed to additional guests, police said.

Authorities said they had no description of the gunman, who escaped.

Several hundred people who had bought tickets for the basketball player’s 29th birthday rushed the ballroom and overwhelmed about a dozen security officers, a Fairfax County police spokesman said.

The proposed trade that would send Chris Dudley from the Portland Trail Blazers to the New York Knicks is valid, an arbitrator ruled, saying it was not an attempt to circumvent the salary cap.

“It’s a major victory for the association and the player,” said Bill Hunter, executive director of the National Basketball Players Assn. “The players have abided by the agreement and the arbitrator ruled that our interpretation was correct.”

Arbitrator Kenneth Dam also ruled that Dudley should be paid the $1.13 million salary he was originally offered, not the NBA minimum $272,250.
