Blaze Chars Section of Camp Pendleton
A brush fire that started during a Marine training exercise at Camp Pendleton burned 160 acres near the Orange County line Tuesday night.
The fire started about 5:45 p.m. in the northwest area of the camp, near the headquarters for reservists at the U.S. Marine Corps base, said Staff Sgt. Janice Hagar, a Marine Corps spokeswoman.
No one was injured and no structures were threatened by the blaze, which burned near Cristianitos and San Mateo roads, just short of the Orange County line, she said. Firefighters from the camp, with assistance from Orange County Fire Authority crews, stopped the progress of the blaze about 6:35 p.m., Hagar said. They expected to have it under control shortly afterward, she said.
Hagar said the fire started during a training exercise but had no further information. She said the exact cause is under investigation.
Callers to the Fire Authority reported seeing the blaze from about 10 miles away, in the area of Coto de Caza Drive and Oso Parkway.
Camp Pendleton covers 125,000 acres and houses 37,000 active-duty Marines, she said.
