Collins Practices With the Panthers

Kerry Collins resumed working out with the Carolina Panthers’ first-team offense Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C., increasing the possibility of him playing Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.

Collins, whose jaw was fractured in two places by a hit from Denver linebacker Bill Romanowski on Aug. 9, still has not been cleared to play.

Quarterback Steve Young resumed practicing with the San Francisco 49ers and, barring any setbacks, will start Sunday against New Orleans. Also, with Marquez Pope injured, Darnell Walker will play right cornerback for the 49ers. . . . Brian Williams, the veteran New York Giant center who has been sidelined since being poked in the right eye during practice in July, will undergo surgery Friday for an infra-orbital fracture. . . . The Atlanta Falcons haven’t decided whether to take disciplinary action against linebacker Cornelius Bennett, who pleaded guilty to a sexual-misconduct charge that could send him to jail for a year, Coach Dan Reeves said.
