Second-Half Rally Wins It for Valley

Valley College came back from a 10-point deficit in the second half to defeat Santa Barbara, 30-17, on Saturday at Santa Barbara, avenging the Monarchs’ only loss last season.

With Valley trailing in the third quarter, 17-7, Armone Lochard came off of the bench and scored the first two times he touched the ball to put the Monarchs ahead to stay. Lochard scored from the 16 and the one-yard line, and finished with 71 yards in 16 carries.

Antwane Smith gave Valley a 7-0 lead with a five-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the game.

Smith finished with 52 yards in 19 carries.

Tony Racius completed 33 of 47 passes for 317 yards, including a 29-yard screen pass to Kenyatta Burris for a fourth-quarter touchdown that made it 28-17. The touchdown came in the middle of 11 consecutive second-half completions for Racius.

Racius threw mostly short passes to the sidelines to six receivers. Randall Lane hauled in nine catches for 57 yards.

Leaford Hackett had eight receptions for 94 yards, including a 34-yarder that set up Lochard’s go-ahead touchdown.

The Monarchs tightened up defensively in the second half and allowed only three first downs after allowing nine in the first half.

For the Vaqueros, Colin Haggerty caught eight passes for 84 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown.
