Panthers Re-Sign Carrier

The Carolina Panthers re-signed Mark Carrier on Tuesday to help fill the void created by the loss of wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad to a broken wrist.

Carrier, who will be 32 next month, was not offered a new contract by the Panthers in the off-season after leading Carolina’s wide receivers last year with 58 receptions for 808 yards, falling victim to the Panthers’ youth movement at the position.

Muhammad, leading the team’s wideouts with 12 receptions for 114 yards, underwent surgery Tuesday to have a pin placed in his left wrist. He is expected to miss up to four weeks.

The Panthers signed Carrier for the remainder of the season. Terms were not disclosed.

To clear a roster spot and room under the salary cap for Carrier, the Panthers released third-string quarterback Shane Matthews.

Doctors fused the sixth and seventh vertebrae in Ike Hilliard’s spine in New York, and said the Giants’ rookie wide receiver should be able to play next year.

“Surgically, everything went well,” team physician Russell Warren said. “Ike will be in a collar for three months.”

Hilliard, 21, sprained a ligament between the sixth and seventh vertebrae against Jacksonville on Sept. 7.

The Dallas Cowboys suffered two significant injuries in their riveting Monday night victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, losing standout guard Larry Allen (strained left hamstring) and defensive tackle Chad Hennings (strained left groin).

Neither played in the second half, but both should be helped by the Cowboys’ bye this week.

“Maybe we’ll have them back for Chicago,” Coach Barry Switzer said of the game on Sept. 28.
