Gunman Sought in Shootings in Baldwin Park
Authorities were searching late Wednesday for a man armed with a rifle who killed one person and then opened fire on police in Baldwin Park, police said.
Another victim was found critically wounded, but it was not immediately clear if he was shot by the same gunman, authorities said.
The San Bernardino Freeway was closed during the evening rush hour as West Covina and Baldwin Park police, a sheriff’s special weapons team and California Highway Patrol officers searched for the gunman.
Details were sketchy, but the chain of events began about 6 p.m. at the Queen’s Lodge motel in the 14000 block of Merced Avenue, near the freeway, sheriff’s Sgt. David Halm said.
One person was shot to death, possibly during a carjacking, according to reports from the scene.
“As the officers were responding to the area, they observed the suspect with a rifle,” said Baldwin Park Police Capt. Dan Higginboghan. “The suspect started shooting at the officers who were responding.”
The CHP closed the freeway as police searched for the gunman.
