Denny Neagle, one of the top contenders for the NL Cy Young Award, will miss his scheduled start for the Atlanta Braves today because of lingering soreness in his non-pitching shoulder.

An MRI exam Monday discovered a small tear in Neagle’s right rotator cuff, making it difficult for him to do a full windup or lift his glove on fielding plays.

Reliever Paul Byrd is expected to start in Neagle’s place.

Neagle is 20-3 with a 2.67 earned-run average.

The Braves set a major league record with their 12th grand slam of the season. Ryan Klesko hit the bases-loaded homer in the first inning off New York Met pitcher Bobby Jones. The Braves broke the record set a year ago by Seattle and Baltimore.
