NCAA DIVISION I-AA

* AZUSA PACIFIC (0-2) vs. CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE (1-2)

At North Campus Stadium, 6:05 p.m.

The Matadors go from three consecutive Division I-A opponents on the road to an NAIA lightweight at home. Northridge, looking to rebound from losses at Hawaii and New Mexico State, wants to make a big impression with the local folk, so the Cougars could be in for a rough night. Azusa Pacific has allowed 389 yards passing, which for Northridge senior quarterback Aaron Flowers is a day’s work. Flowers, Northridge’s career leader with 4,697 yards passing despite playing in only his second season with the Matadors, ranks second in Division I-AA in total offense at 374.7 yards per game. He has passed for 300 or more yards in nine of 14 games as the Matador starter and has thrown for 400 or more yards twice this season. Brian Comer, who has 26 receptions for 301 yards and four touchdowns, and Aaron Arnold, 21 for 380 and three scores, have been his primary targets. Azusa Pacific senior tailback Elijah Raphael, who attended Kennedy High and Valley College, leads the Cougars. Raphael missed Azusa Pacific’s 28-21 loss to Hardin-Simmons last week after rushing for 92 yards but spraining a knee in a 25-15 loss at San Diego two weeks ago. Sophomore linebacker Don Ebenhoch, who played at Notre Dame High, had six tackles last week.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

* VALLEY (1-0) vs. DESERT (0-1)

At College of the Desert, 7 p.m.

Valley’s high-powered offense got off to a slow start against Santa Barbara. The Monarchs needed a second-half rally to pull out a 30-17 victory. Desert Coach Steve Dostal, whose defense is comprised primarily of freshmen, is braced for an air assault in this nonconference matchup. “I don’t know how we’ll stop them,” Dostal said. Desert, which lost to Arizona Western, 19-14, last week, is coming off a 3-7 season after going 7-3 in 1995 and winning a Foothill Conference title in 1994 with a 9-2 record. Sophomore wide receivers Al Cardona, who had more than 100 receiving yards against Western, and Dante Hawkins and Frank Barry figure prominently in the Roadrunners’ attack. Valley sophomore quarterback Tom Racius passed for more than 300 yards in his debut as a starter, spreading 33 completions among six receivers. This is the first meeting between the teams since 1987.

* VENTURA (0-1) vs. SANTA MONICA (1-0)

At Santa Monica College, 7 p.m.

Ventura’s Brandon Scott, a freshman from Orange, N.J., was the Western State Conference’s player of the week after rushing for 217 yards and a touchdown in a 48-17 loss to West L.A. Scott, however, suffered a pinched nerve in his shoulder and sat out practice this week. He is expected to play in tonight’s WSC game. Ventura’s offense sputtered in its first game under Coach Terry Morris, who installed a run-and-shoot attack. Freshman quarterback Rolando Garcia and backup Bartley Patrick combined for six interceptions and receivers dropped several passes. Garcia will remain the starter, Morris said. Santa Monica rolled up 406 yards in a 28-7 WSC victory over Glendale. Dylen Smith passed for 214 yards and two touchdowns for the Corsairs against Glendale.

* KINGS RIVER (0-1) vs. ANTELOPE VALLEY (0-1)

At Antelope Valley College, 7 p.m.

These teams haven’t played since 1990. For the second consecutive week, Antelope Valley will be without tailback Lafayette Bailey, who sat out last week’s 33-19 loss at Moorpark because of academic reasons. Bailey, who rushed for more than 800 yards last season, is eligible this week but was dealt a one-week suspension by Coach Brent Carder for disciplinary reasons. Quarterbacks Brad Norris and Mike Gleich, who platooned against Moorpark, remain in a battle for the starting job. Kings River, member of the perennially tough Central Valley Conference, is coming off a 6-4 season in which three losses were by a total of nine points. Last week, San Marino Valley defeated Kings River, 16-0. The Tigers’ defense, virtually intact from last season, is led by 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end Mike Maloy and 6-2, 240-pound linebacker Rob Bennie. The offense is inexperienced, led by freshman quarterback Matt Thompson.

* GLENDALE (0-1) vs. VICTOR VALLEY (1-0)

At Victor Valley College, 7 p.m.

Glendale’s defense, its strength the past two seasons, is on the mend. Linebacker Jin Hur and defensive back Clifton Butts, both starters last season, suffered sprained ankles last week in a 28-7 loss to Santa Monica. Both are doubtful for tonight’s nonconference game. The Vaqueros moved the ball into Santa Monica territory five times in the second half, but scored only once. John Carnevali, a sophomore from St. Francis High, completed 15 of 42 passes for 174 yards. Victor Valley, a 21-0 winner over L.A. Southwest last week, is coming off a 2-8 season and consecutive losing seasons dating to 1993. Freshmen Steven Hrin and H.R. Lugo rotate at quarterback. Hrin ran for a touchdown and passed for another last week. Lugo had a touchdown pass. Running back Monty Franklin, who caught a 59-yard scoring pass against Southwest, is the Rams’ top offensive threat.
