Sonora Undermines Savanna’s Plans

After the third quarter, Savanna’s players raised their hands indicating four fingers. They probably thought the fourth quarter belonged to them. They were almost right, when Robin Dano found Jason Boggs, with one second left, on a 43-yard touchdown pass that pulled the Rebels to within one with the conversion pending.

Sonora had different plans. Cornerback Mark Pascual stopped Savanna’s Leon Kellum on the four-yard line and the Raiders escaped with a 21-20 victory Friday night at Glover Stadium in nonleague action.

Sonora (1-1) had taken the lead with one minute left. Quarterback Clint Patton led the Raiders on an eight-play, 61-yard drive capped by a six-yard touchdown pass to Deric Hilliard. The two combined on another completion for the two-point conversion and a 21-14 lead, which proved to be key to Sonora’s victory.

Camron King returned the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to Savanna’s 37-yard line with 52 seconds to play. A facemask penalty gave the Rebels (1-1) the ball on Sonora’s 48-yard line.

On the first play from scrimmage, Dano was tackled on the 43-yard line. With no timeouts left, Dano threw the touchdown pass to Brown.

Brown rushed for 87 yards in 13 carries and three touchdowns.
