Mater Dei Rallies to Defeat Capistrano Valley in Boys’ Volleyball

Down 12-7 in the final game, Mater Dei scored eight points with Vince Pham serving and the Monarchs defeated Capistrano Valley in five games in a South Coast League boys’ volleyball match Wednesday at Mater Dei.

The 10th-ranked Monarchs (7-0, 1-0) had a 14-11 lead in the first game, but Capistrano Valley scored five consecutive points to win the game. After winning the second game, 15-6, Mater Dei won the third, 15-13.

The Cougars (1-4, 0-1) won the fourth game, 15-6, and took the lead in the fifth game before Pham began serving for Mater Dei.

In other South Coast League matches:

No. 9 Dana Hills 3, San Clemente 0--David Moser and Peter Butler each had eight kills to lead Dana Hills (5-2, 1-0). San Clemente is 1-6, 0-1.

Trabuco Hills 3, Mission Viejo 0--Mike Okano led host Trabuco Hills with 10 assists, and Cory Lee added 27 assists as Mission Viejo (1-4, 0-1) lost, 15-6, 15-5, 15-6. The victory ended a 12-game losing streak in league games for Trabuco Hills.

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Western 3, Kennedy 2--Rupesh Bhakta had 18 kills as Kennedy (6-3, 2-3) lost, 6-15, 15-13, 10-15, 15-11, 15-10. Western is 4-5, 2-3.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Rancho Alamitos 1--Chris Smith had 17 kills and Anh Nguyen had 13 for the host Aztecs (2-6, 2-2), who won 15-11, 15-10, 10-15, 15-13.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 3, Westminster 2--Jason Roth had 24 kills for Ocean View (4-2, 2-0), which won, 9-15, 15-3, 14-16, 15-5, 15-11. Junior Tau had 29 kills for Westminster (4-4, 0-2).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 3, Whittier Christian 2--David Engle had 17 kills and Gary Bogert had 61 assists for host Calvary Chapel (1-4, 1-0), which won, 9-15, 15-8, 14-16, 15-10, 15-6. Whittier Christian is 1-1.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 3, Huntington Beach 2--Chris VanReusen led host Edison (2-3) with 35 kills and Justin Palmer added four aces, as host Huntington Beach (3-4) lost, 4-15, 11-15, 15-12, 15-13, 15-9.

No. 4 Marina 3, No. 7 Fountain Valley 0--Marina is 4-3, 1-0 after the 15-8, 16-14, 15-2 victory. Brad Keenan led visiting Fountain Valley with 15 kills and 15 digs.

In Golden West League badminton:

Anaheim 10, Santa Ana Valley 9--Anaheim’s John Vo defeated John Nguyen of Santa Ana, 13-13 (5-1), 13-13 (5-4) to win the match for Anaheim (2-1 in league).

In Century League golf:

Villa Park 214, Foothill 218--Nick Seymour shot two-over 38 for Foothill (7-5, 2-1) at Green River’s Orange Course. Mark Hewlett led Villa Park with a 41.

In Empire League golf:

Sunny Hills 190, Cypress 212--Brian Sigler shot one-under 34 for Sunny Hills (5-3-1, 2-0) at Cypress. Teammate Jeff Park shot a 35.

In Olympic League golf:

Brethren Christian 207, Calvary Chapel 234--Brethren Christian’s Cassidy Traub shot one-under 34 at Cypress.

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Laguna Hills 204, Aliso Niguel 218--Chris Benway was medalist for host Laguna Hills (6-2, 2-2) with a four-over 39 at Mission Viejo. Aliso Niguel falls to 7-3, 2-1.

In nonleague golf:

Newport Harbor 409, Long Beach Millikan 410--Rusty Hill made par on the last hole at Santa Ana to preserve the victory for Newport Harbor (2-4). Hill finished with a 76 in the two-day event. The front nine was played at El Dorado.

Santa Barbara San Marcos 784, Santa Margarita 791--San Marcos’ George Downing shot one-over 73 at Coto de Caza in the second day of a 36-hole match. Steve Conway shot 75 for Santa Margarita and three players tied at 77 for the Eagles.

Servite 200, Los Angeles Loyola 210--Will Luciano and Ryan Cole each shot two-over 38 to lead Servite (5-2) at Los Coyotes. Loyola is 4-2.

University 387, Huntington Beach 399--University’s Chris Kugel was the medalist with a three-over 75 in the two-day match at SeaCliff and Rancho San Joaquin. The Trojans are 7-2.

Valencia 402, Rancho Alamitos 448--Brian Birkinshaw had four birdies and five bogeys for a one-over 73 for Valencia (3-3) at Alta Vista.

In nonleague girls’ golf:

Canyon 215, Esperanza 217--Danielle Ayres was the medalist with a seven-over 36 for visiting Canyon (6-3-1) at Birch Hills.

In nonleague softball:

Canyon 5, Valencia 3--Wendy Takehara doubled twice and drove in three runs, including the game-winner in the sixth inning, for Canyon (10-6). Valencia is 5-7.

Rosary 8-11, Fullerton 0-3 (both 5, mercy)--Christa Arriaga pitched a six-hitter in the first game for Rosary.

Santa Ana 9, Anaheim 1--Jessica Calderon pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts for Santa Ana (6-4). Calderon also had three hits and three RBIs.

Tustin 2, Troy 1 (8)--Tustin’s Mayra Vazquez scored on an RBI single by Julie Norris in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game for Tustin (4-6-1). Troy is 8-2.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 8 Servite 9, Troy 9 (Servite wins on games, 76-69)--The host Friars handed the Warriors (9-1) their first loss of the season, with Servite singles players winning seven of nine sets. Ryan Moore swept his opponents, 6-0, 6-4, 6-1, and Brock Heimann and Pete Sweet only lost one of three games for Servite (9-1).
