Ocampo Wins Division in Wrestling Event

Olivia Ocampo of Oxnard Channel Islands won the 104-pound division and Terry Kleinberg of Palos Verdes Peninsula finished second at 137 pounds in the U.S. High School Girls’ Wrestling Championships last weekend at Ann Arbor, Mich.

A total of 272 girls from 38 states, including 21 Californians, participated in the tournament. Competitors competed independently of their schools. They were funded privately or by their school or booster club.

Ocampo defeated Kellie Odinet of Louisiana in the 104-pound championship match. Kleinberg reached the final before losing to Tonya Evinger of Missouri.

Brenda Whited of Palos Verdes Peninsula finished fifth at 123 pounds. Shirley Nunez of Whittier Pioneer was seventh.

Valerie Villa of Baldwin Park was fifth at 154 pounds.

Long Beach Poly’s Ricky Anderson, who has committed to play basketball at Arizona, David Hamilton of Compton (Auburn), Tayshaun Prince of Compton Dominguez (Kentucky) and David Bluthenthal (USC) and Tony Bland (Syracuse) of Westchester are among the players who will compete for the West team in the Eddie Jones All-Star Classic on April 19 at the Great Western Forum.

The game features the West team against a squad of U.S. all-stars, including JaRon Rush of Pembroke Academy (Kansas City, Mo.) and Jerome Moiso of Milford Academy (Milford, Conn.), who have committed to UCLA, and Sam Clancy Jr. of St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), who has committed to USC.

Schea Cotton, a former standout at Santa Ana Mater Dei and Bellflower St. John Bosco who attended St. Thomas More Prep in Oakdale, Conn., this year, will play for the West team.

A Southern California all-star game featuring other top seniors from the Southland will be played before the West. vs. U.S. game.
