Lamb Starts Like a Lion

David Lamb (Newbury Park) isn’t happy about returning to the Baltimore Orioles’ double-A affiliate in Bowie, Md., but he is glad to be back at shortstop after playing second base most of last season.

Lamb, a switch-hitter, is batting .450 in his first 20 at-bats. He batted .331 in 269 at-bats at Bowie in 1997 after being promoted from Class-A Frederick (Md.) at midseason.

The Orioles’ triple-A shortstop, Mitch Simons, is 29 years old and triple-A second baseman P.J. Forbes is 30, making Lamb much more of a major-league prospect than either.

Lamb, 22, is in his sixth pro season after being a second-round draft pick in 1993.
