Oakland A’s catcher A.J. Hinch was listed as day-to-day after suffering a concussion during Thursday’s 12-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Hinch was struck in the right temple by a foul ball. The rookie catcher was treated at Oakland Coliseum Thursday night and was monitored throughout the evening.

“He took a glancing blow to the temple,” team physician Dr. Jerrald Goldman said. “He had a brief loss of consciousness.”

The Baltimore Orioles put Mike Mussina on the 15-day disabled list and remained hopeful the ace right-hander will miss only two starts because of a painful wart on the index finger of his pitching hand. Baltimore called up right-hander Sidney Ponson from Rochester, its affiliate in the triple-A International League. It was unclear whether Ponson, 21, who has never pitched in the majors, would replace Mussina in the rotation. . . . Chili Davis, the New York Yankees’ designated hitter, will undergo surgery Monday to repair a torn tendon in his right ankle and will be sidelined for at least eight weeks. Davis, 38, went on the disabled list April 7, retroactive to April 3. . . . Texas reliever Danny Patterson, who had arthroscopic shoulder surgery last September, was activated from the disabled list. To make room for Patterson, the Rangers designated right-hander Julio Santana for assignment.
