Mosquito District’s Assets to Be Split
The city and county are deciding how to split property taxes the two governments will receive once the Moorpark Mosquito Abatement District disbands and hands over its job of controlling pest insects to the city.
After the district agreed to disband last year, the two governments began discussing the split of its tax revenue. A tentative plan would give 85% to the city.
The district is scheduled to hand over its operation to the city once the county Local Agency Formation Commission approves an application that was submitted by the city last week.
The city staff has proposed the commission hold a hearing on May 20 or June 17 to make a decision on the district’s dissolution.
In addition to the future taxes, the city will receive 93% of the district’s assets--trucks, office supplies, interest income and buildings--as well as $1.4 million the district accumulated in assessments over the years.
