Edison Wins League Softball Game

Edison won its first Sunset League softball game in six years Tuesday by defeating host Fountain Valley, 3-2.

Kristin Degree hit a two-run single in the fourth for Edison (9-8, 1-2 in league), which took advantage of two Fountain Valley errors in the inning to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Kelly Birk struck out six to improve to 6-5 for the Chargers.

Natalie King (6-4) took the loss for Fountain Valley (10-10, 2-1).

In another Sunset League game:

No. 7 Marina 2, Los Alamitos 1--Heather Hagen (9-3) pitched a four-hitter and Natalie Bonillas and Alicia Velazquez each drove in a run with singles for host Marina (13-5, 2-1).

In the Century League:

No. 2 Foothill 2, Canyon 0--Kristen Mann had two hits, a run batted in and a stolen base for host Foothill (16-3, 2-0).

Villa Park 4, Santa Ana Valley 3--Jill Sandoval’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Liz Willey with the winning run for Villa Park (10-8-1, 2-1). Jen Sturgeon hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score, 3-3.

In Empire League softball:

Kennedy 1, El Dorado 0 (8 innings)--Nicole Crouse pitched her first no-hitter and Stephanie Wolter, who had three hits, scored the winning run in the top of the eighth on an error for visiting Kennedy (10-6, 2-0).

In the Freeway League:

No. 8 La Habra 4, Buena Park 1--Winning pitcher Christina Gibbons struck out five for host La Habra (13-5-1, 3-0). Cara Cook hit a home run for Buena Park (8-8, 2-1).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 3, Cerritos Valley Christian 0--Jessica Edwards (7-3) pitched a perfect game with 12 strikeouts for the visiting Lancers (12-5, 3-0).

In Empire League badminton:

No. 3 Century 12, No. 2 Loara 7--Samay Por swept in singles and mixed doubles, with Vuthy Sem, to lead Century (11-1, 5-1) in the upset.

In Express League baseball:

Walnut Southlands Christian 10, Liberty Christian 0 (6, mercy)--Josh Oberlander (2-2) pitched a perfect game and was two for three with a double and two RBIs for Southlands Christian.

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 10, Orange Lutheran 9--Sean Ireland had a three-run homer in the first and freshman John Dinglason hit a two-run single in the fifth to erase a one-run deficit in the fifth for host Brethren Christian (7-7-1, 2-3-1).

In Olympic League golf:

Orange Lutheran 193, St. Margaret’s 201--John Hartwig shot a two-under-par 33 for Orange Lutheran (9-4, 3-3) at Willowick.

In the Orange League:

No. 4 Brea Olinda 185, Valencia 213--Dave Barbera shot a three-under 34 for Brea Olinda (13-0, 6-0), which shot par as a team at Alta Vista.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 2 University 185, Laguna Hills 187--Brandon Fella and Ryan Miller each shot a one-under 35 for University (11-2, 6-0) at Laguna Hills Golf Club. Chris Benway shot 35 for Laguna Hills (10-5, 5-4).

In Sea View League golf:

No. 3 Santa Margarita 180, Newport Harbor 204--Senior Jimmy Dunn had four consecutive birdies to lead Santa Margarita (10-3, 6-1) with a four-under 31 at Costa Mesa Mesa Linda. Teammate Ryan Dwight shot par.

Santa Margarita split its squad and also played a nonleague match against 10th-ranked Villa Park. Dave Hawkins shot a two-over 38 to lead the Eagles to a 202-206 victory on the Orange Course at Green River. Mark Hewlett shot a 39 for Villa Park.

In Sunset League boys’ swimming:

Fountain Valley 94, Huntington Beach 89--The Oilers led by one point going into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. But Fountain Valley won in 3 minutes 25.23 seconds, anchored by junior Geoff Maracek, to win the meet.

Maracek also won the 200 individual medley (2:11.79), the 500 freestyle (5:10.48) and was on the winning 200 medley relay (1:47.23.)

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 9, Orange Lutheran 9 (Whittier Christian wins in games, 75-73)--Tim Leetrickel and Jared Baker won the final doubles set, 7-5, to tie the score for Whittier Christian (2-7, 2-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 14, Santa Margarita 4--Parker Collins won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 27-0 in singles for for Corona del Mar (13-0, 6-0).
