Oxnard’s Victory Knots Division Race

The Oxnard College baseball team moved into a tie for first place in the Western State Conference North Division with an 11-7 victory Thursday over Cuesta at Oxnard College.

Jack Wilson had four hits and two runs batted in for the Condors (24-9, 15-5), including a home run in the third inning. Jeff Sanchez added three hits and two RBIs and Kevin Mellinger had a home run in the eighth.

Cuesta is 28-6, 15-5.

In other baseball games:

Canyons 12, Valley 5--Sergio Franco, Albert Palma, Jesse Daggett and Kris Yeaman each homered for host Canyons (23-12, 14-8) in a WSC South Division come-from-behind victory.

After his team spotted the Monarchs (10-23, 7-15) a 4-0 lead in the first inning, Daggett put the Cougars on the scoreboard with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning.

Palma hit a three-run home run in the second to give Canyons a short-lived lead, 5-4. After Valley scored once in the third inning, Yeaman put the Cougars on top to stay with a home run and Franco put the game out of reach with a sixth-inning grand slam.

Brian Bishop (3-1) pitched five scoreless innings to earn the victory, allowing three hits while striking out three and walking four. The Cougars turned four double plays while Bishop was pitching.

Ventura 8, Santa Barbara City 6--Adrian Gascon’s two-run home run in a five-run fourth inning gave the Pirates a one-run lead as Ventura rallied to win a WSC game over visiting Santa Barbara City.

Manny Mosqueda and Andy Super also hit two-run home runs for Ventura (15-17, 7-13).

Chris Cicuto added three hits and Jason Watkins had two hits and three stolen bases for Ventura.

Glendale 4, Bakersfield 3--Wes Hutchison threw a six-hitter, allowing just two earned runs and striking out four in a WSC South Division game at Glendale.

Eli Albertson had three hits and an RBI and Jesse Mitchell hit a home run for the Vaqueros (23-13, 14-8).

SOFTBALL

CS Northridge 5-1, CS Sacramento 0-4--Ashlie Hayes had two hits to lead the Matadors to a victory in the first game of a Big West Conference doubleheader split with Cal State Sacramento at Northridge.

Augrista Belford hit a home run in the fifth inning and scored once in a three-run second inning for Northridge (32-17, 17-9).

In the second game, Sacramento tagged Northridge starter Veronica Lopez (1-1) for three runs in the third inning. Nanci Block paced the Hornets (23-20, 13-13) with two hits and one RBI.

Pierce 8, Glendale 5--Charlotte Ali went four for four and had an RBI triple for Pierce (15-15, 9-4) in a WSC game at Scholl Canyon Park in Glendale.

Amber Gutierrez, Jennifer DelReal and Tammy Wilhite each had two hits for Pierce, with Wilhite hitting a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Bakersfield 3, Canyons 1--Alanna Gomez was three for three and Crystal Curren had a run-scoring single for Canyons (12-12, 8-4) but the Cougars dropped a WSC South Division game at College of the Canyons.

Bakersfield (21-3-1) scored twice with two out in the top of the seventh on three singles and an error.

La Verne 5, Cal Lutheran 2--Mandy Comer’s home run for Cal Lutheran (23-17, 12-2) tied the score in the sixth inning of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament round-robin game at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

La Verne is 18-8 overall and 11-3 in conference play.

In an earlier game, Cal Lutheran won 2-0 over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (20-11, 9-5), allowing pitcher Kathy Proffitt to improve to 15-9.
