Rio Mesa Gets Drop on Hawthorne, 1-0

Greg Ramirez scored on an error with two out in the seventh inning Saturday, giving Rio Mesa High a 1-0 baseball victory over Hawthorne in the Redondo tournament.

The Spartans (16-4) have won eight consecutive games.

Alex Tellez (2-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out six for Rio Mesa, which had three hits.

In other high school baseball games:

Palisades 9, Monroe 7--Rafael Arroyo had three hits and scored two runs, and Damien Ritter and Victor Hall each had a single and a triple but the Vikings (9-11-1) lost in the Redondo Union tournament at Monroe.

San Fernando 9, University 2--Claudio Gutierrez had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two, and Francisco Enriquez had two hits, scored two runs and knocked in two for the Tigers in the Kennedy tournament at University.

Fernando Hernandez added two hits and drove in a run for San Fernando (6-14).

L.A. Baptist 12, Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary 3--Peter Dirksen had two hits and four RBIs, and Tim Feirfeil had two triples and scored three runs for the Knights (12-4) at L.A. Baptist.

Raul Pacheco (3-0) allowed four hits and struck out five in six innings for the Knights.

SOFTBALL

Highland 5, Serrano 1--Melissa Rawson had two triples and scored a run for the Bulldogs (14-3) in the first round of the Paraclete tournament at Lancaster City Park.

Kelly Presten added two hits and an RBI for Highland.

Notre Dame 12, San Fernando 0--Karen Tobin hit a double and a triple, and scored three runs for the Knights in the first round of the Paraclete tournament at Lancaster City Park.

Cheryl Acosta had three hits and three runs batted in for Notre Dame (9-8-1).

Highland 5, Notre Dame 2--Ashlie D’Errico had three hits, an RBI and scored a run for the Bulldogs in the quarterfinals the Paraclete tournament at Lancaster City Park.

Katie Gonzales had three hits and scored a run for Highland (15-3).

Veronica Arredondo had a double for Notre Dame (9-9-1).

Oak Park 3, Montclair Prep 1--Vivian Doan had two hits and two RBIs, and Dana Porter (7-6) struck out seven and walked one for the Eagles (7-6) in the first round of the Paraclete tournament at Lancaster City Park.

La Reina 8, Antelope Valley 0--Danielle Field (8-1) allowed one hit and struck out eight in six innings, and Mackenzie Vandergeest had two hits, including a home run, scored two runs and drove in two for the Regents in the Paraclete tournament at Lancaster City Park.

La Reina 7, L.A. Baptist 0--Kristen Ward (8-1) retired the first 13 batters and finished with a two-hitter and six strikeouts for the Regents (16-2) in the quarterfinals of the Paraclete tournament at Lancaster City Park.

Vandergeest had a double, a single and drove in a run for the Regents.

VOLLEYBALL

Sylmar tournament--Sylmar beat Eagle Rock in the semifinals, 15-12, but lost to Venice, 15-8, in the final at Sylmar.

The Spartans defeated Marshall in the quarterfinals, 15-3.

Poly defeated Grant in the quarterfinals, 15-5, but lost to Venice in the semifinals, 15-8.
