A 4-year-old boy was struck by a car Wednesday when he darted into the path of the oncoming vehicle near his home in Stanton, sheriff’s officials said.

The child, whose name was not released, was rushed to UCI Medical Center, where he was treated for serious injuries, said Lt. Hector Rivera of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The accident occurred at 1:51 p.m. in the 7700 block of Santa Catalina Avenue, a residential area, Rivera said.

The child “just ran out into the street very suddenly, and the driver . . . was unable to stop,” Rivera said. The driver was not cited, he said.

The Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Reconstruction team spent much of the afternoon investigating the accident site, using witness statements and physical evidence to determine how the accident happened, authorities said.
