Los Angeles firefighters were trying to determine the cause of a fire Wednesday that gutted a house in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains.

More than 60 firefighters fought the blaze in the 5100 block of Calatrana Drive that began at 3:12 p.m. and was extinguished in 40 minutes, said Bob Collis, a Fire Department spokesman. The home is surrounded by brush, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading, Collis said.

Damage to the house was estimated at $100,000, and possessions worth $400,000 also were lost, Collis said.

Investigators had not determined the cause of the fire, Collis said.

One firefighter twisted his ankle, Collis said, but the fire caused no significant injuries. The occupants weren’t home during the fire.
