Foundation Boosting After-School Activities

A foundation committed to sponsoring after-school activities and sports programs at junior high and high schools has raised more than $200,000 in its first year.

Of the money raised, the Anaheim Prep Sports- Activities Foundation has donated about $80,000 toward after-school programs, said the Rev. Bryan Crow, chairman of the foundation.

The foundation is a joint enterprise of the city and the Anaheim Union High School District. The city contributed $100,000 in seed money; the list of private contributors includes Disneyland, the Mighty Ducks and the Anaheim Angels.

In the first two years, the foundation will focus on giving money to junior high schools, where the need for after-school programs is greatest, Crow said.

Schools can use the money to fund clubs or programs for sports, arts or music.

“We do not designate what they do, we just want it to be additional money for after-school activities,” Crow said. “The whole idea is if the kids have positive input after school, they have a much better chance to make positive decisions about their future.”

The foundation’s goal this year is to raise $300,000, Crow said.
