A 21-year-old woman riding in the back of a car on the Garden Grove Freeway was fatally wounded early Monday by gunfire from a passing car, police said.

Someone fired three to five rounds from a dark-colored compact car into the green Acura Legend on the westbound freeway, west of Magnolia Street, at 3:13 a.m., Police Sgt. Mike Handfield said.

One bullet struck Loan Tran, 21, of Long Beach in the head. She was taken to UCI Medical Center and pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m.

Four people--a woman and three men in their early 20s--also in the car were uninjured. They told police the other car pulled alongside as they drove in the fast lane and started shooting for no apparent reason.

After Tran was hit, her friends drove to a gas station at Garden Grove and Beach boulevards and asked an attendant to call for help.

Descriptions of the assailants were not available, but a white car may have been working with the dark compact, Handfield said. A motive for the shooting--and whether it was random or planned violence--has not been determined.
