Oklahoma State’s 11-year home winning streak against nonconference opponents ended Tuesday night shockingly.

Gary Durrant scored 31 points, including the winning basket with 1.1 seconds left, and Damon Arnette added 24 points as Florida Atlantic stunned the 11th-ranked Cowboys, 83-81, at Stillwater, Okla.

The loss ended the Cowboys’ 80-game home winning streak against nonconference foes dating to 1987. And it was pulled off by a team that came in with a 1-3 record after winning only five games last season.

“I told the squad, they’ll just have to live with this the rest of their lives,” said Oklahoma State Coach Eddie Sutton. “Maybe it’ll open their eyes and they’ll gain something from it, but right now it’s pretty painful.”

Oklahoma State (4-1) got a school-record 18 assists from Doug Gottlieb, a junior from Tustin High, but committed 17 turnovers. The Owls had only nine.

The game was supposed to be a tuneup for Oklahoma State’s game Saturday against No. 18 UCLA in the Wooden Classic at the Arrowhead Pond. But the one-two punch of Arnette and Durrant proved too much for the Cowboys. Durrant, who had 10 rebounds, made five of the Owls’ 11 three-point baskets and Arnette added three.

Joe Adkins scored 19 for Oklahoma State, but got the ball stripped in the closing seconds, leading to Durrant’s game-winning shot. Adkins’ desperation jumper missed at the buzzer.

“We’ve been working since the first day of practice the day I got there four years ago to have an opportunity to win a game like this,” said Florida Atlantic Coach Kevin Billerman. “The credit goes to our players tonight. We’ve talked so much about toughness and being ready to do things like box out and take charges and be tough defensively and I thought we did that at times.”

Penn State 65, No. 10 Temple 64--Joe Crispin scored 18 points and made a 15-foot shot with 20 seconds to play, lifting the Nittany Lions at State College, Pa., and handing the Owls their second loss in eight days.

Temple (4-2) was coming off a 73-70 loss to Penn, the Quakers’ first victory over the Owls in 16 years. Penn State (4-1) hadn’t defeated Temple since 1991.

No. 12 Syracuse 93, Quinnipiac 65--Etan Thomas scored a career-high 26 points to help the Orangemen (6-0) overpower the new-to-Division I Braves (3-2) at Syracuse, N.Y.

Quinnipiac, which played in Division II last season, also lost this season to No. 1 Connecticut, 102-60.

No. 16 Indiana 76, Notre Dame 72--Luke Recker scored 27 points and the Hoosiers won in overtime at South Bend, Ind., despite six-of-15 shooting from the free-throw line in the final eight minutes.

With the Irish students chanting “No Big Ten,” voicing their distaste for a possible alignment between Notre Dame (2-5) and the conference that Indiana (7-1) belongs to, Notre Dame missed its last five shots.
