With their secondary ailing, the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday re-signed Larry Brown, their most valuable player in the Super Bowl three years ago.

Brown played his last game for the Cowboys in the Super Bowl, where he had two interceptions of Neil O’Donnell against Pittsburgh.

Brown became a free agent and signed a $12.5-million, five-year deal with Oakland, but he was kicked off the team in the middle of the 1997 season for what the Raiders claimed was “conduct detrimental to the team.”

He was signed by the Cowboys for $76,000 for the remainder of the regular season.

Cornerbacks Deion Sanders and Kevin Smith will sit out Sunday’s game at New Orleans, so Brown should play right away.

Quarterback Chris Chandler, his right ankle heavily taped, returned to practice and said he expects to play Sunday for the first-place Atlanta Falcons against Indianapolis. The Philadelphia Eagles put starting defensive tackle Hollis Thomas on injured reserve because of a biceps injury. . . . Henry Ellard was released by the New England Patriots, five games after he came out of retirement to help their injury-depleted receiver corps. . . . Tremain Mack was back in jail and will sit out the Cincinnati Bengals’ final four games because of his latest drunken driving arrest. A judge in Clermont County ruled that Mack, 24, had violated probation from a drunken driving conviction there by getting arrested again on the same charge in Cincinnati last October. . . . Neil O’Donnell regained the Bengals’ starting quarterback job with no guarantee that he’ll keep it for the rest of the season. . . . The Jacksonville Jaguars have listed left tackle Tony Boselli as doubtful for Sunday’s game against Detroit because of an injured ankle. Coach Tom Coughlin said the lineman was having trouble walking early in the week. . . . Kansas City Chief guard Dave Szott will sit out the remainder of the season after being placed on the injured reserve list because of a biceps injury. To fill the roster spot, the Chiefs signed tackle Ricky Siglar. . . . The New Jersey Sports and Exhibition Authority is exploring the possibility of converting Giants Stadium into a grass facility.
