Playoff Game Is Moved to Trabuco Hills

The Southern Section Division VI semifinal football game tonight between Irvine and Santa Margarita has been moved to Trabuco Hills High. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Saddleback College, where the host Eagles play their home games; however, Santa Margarita Athletic Director Richard Schaaf said Irvine officials requested the change to accommodate their fans.

Seating capacity for the visitors at Saddleback College is about 800, according to school officials, and the total stadium capacity is 3,200. Trabuco Hills officials said the visitors’ side of their stadium seats 2,000 with a total stadium capacity of 5,000.

Cathy Joens of Calvary Chapel has signed to attend George Washington and play basketball, her father, Tim, said Thursday.

Joens, a second-team Times All-Orange County selection last season, averaged 15.3 points and 5.1 assists last season, leading the Eagles to the Southern Section Division IV-AA title game.

Joens is the second county player to choose George Washington, joining Brea Olinda’s Lindsey Davidson.

Heather Zall, a setter at San Clemente High, has orally committed to play volleyball at Cal State Northridge, her father, Richard, said. She is a four-year varsity player and was second-team All-South Coast League her sophomore and junior years.

The Yugoslavian national water polo team will play an exhibition game against the United States at 3 p.m. Saturday at Corona del Mar High.

Southern Section most valuable player Tony Azevedo from Long Beach Wilson will make his debut with the U.S. team.

The game will be preceded by the Orange County High School all-star game at 12:30 and an exhibition between the U.S. women’s national team and Canada at 1:45.

The Mission Viejo Nadadores will host the Chris Vonk Diving Invitational beginning at 3 p.m. today and continuing through Sunday at the Mission Viejo Aquatics Center.

The first springboard and diving invitational for the 1998-99 season is expected to draw more than 200 competitors in novice, Junior Olympic and senior divisions. Platform and synchronized diving competitions will be held Friday, beginning at 3 p.m. On Saturday, divers will participate in one-meter springboard, and on Sunday, three-meter springboard. Competition begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
