Carbajal Fighting Back in Reseda

Michael Carbajal, a former world flyweight champion who launched a comeback after retiring in 1997, will headline a boxing program at Reseda Country Club on Dec. 17.

Carbajal, 31, a former Olympian and five-time world champion, will fight an opponent to be determined in a 10-round main event. Carbajal is 45-4 with 30 knockouts.

A 10-round lightweight co-main event between Kevin Kelley and Cocas Ramirez also is scheduled.

The card will include light-heavyweight Victor Ortiz of Simi Valley in a six-round bout against Steve Mussachio of Las Vegas.

Ortiz is undefeated with four knockouts in five fights. Mussachio is 7-2 with four knockouts.

FOOTBALL

Wide receiver and defensive back Keary Colbert of Hueneme, who broke a finger two weeks ago, will miss the Southern Section Division IV semifinal Saturday against San Luis Obispo, Coach Larry Miller said.

The California Community College Championship Shrine Bowl, the culmination of the state’s version of the NCAA’s Division I-A Bowl Championship Series adopted last season, is scheduled for noon on Dec. 12 at Sacramento City.

The game will match the winners of Northern and Southern championship bowl games played this weekend.

Palomar (9-1) plays host to Long Beach (10-0) in the First Down Bowl on Saturday in Escondido. San Francisco (10-0) plays host to Sequoias (9-1) in the Hawaiian Punch Bowl. Both games are at 1 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD

Robert Radnoti, Thousand Oaks High’s first-year cross-country coach, has been hired as the school’s boys’ and girls’ track coach. Radnoti guided the Thousand Oaks girls to a sixth-place finish in the state Division I cross-country championships.

GOLF

Carrie Leary of Cal State Northridge and Jeff Smith of Weber State have been selected Big Sky Conference women’s golf co-coaches of the year. Leary, in her third season as coach, guided the Matadors to a third-place finish in the Big Sky Conference tournament.

Divina Delasin of Daly City defeated Karen Bogen of Simi Valley, 7 and 6, in the second round of match play in the 32nd annual California Women’s Amateur Championship at the Golf Club at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.

TENNIS

Senior Tiffany Brymer of Rio Mesa High has signed a letter of intent with USC.

Brymer won the Pacific View League singles championship and is the sixth-seeded girls’ 18’s player in Southern California.

WATER POLO

Peter Hudnut of Harvard-Westlake High was named most valuable player and teammate Joe Axelrad was selected most valuable goalie in the Mission League after leading the Wolverines to the Division I final.

AUTO RACING

Jay Drake of Canyon Country is one of four drivers taking part in a two-day Indy Racing League rookie test Thursday and today at Texas Motor Speedway.

Drake earned the opportunity by finishing second in the United States Auto Club 1998 National Midget points standings.

World of Outlaws Sprint Car driver Jac Haudenschild, USAC Silver Crown driver Ryan Newman and 1998 USAC Sprint Car champion Tony Elliott are trying for an IRL license.
