Louisiana Tech Goes Outside to Defeat Arizona for Title

No. 2-ranked Louisiana Tech survived a scare Sunday, thanks to the long-range shooting of Tamicha Jackson.

Jackson made seven of 13 three-point shots and had 30 points as the Lady Techsters (5-1) beat host Arizona, 85-72, in the championship game of the Insight.com Bowl tournament at Tucson. Arizona is 3-3.

In the consolation game, No. 18 Iowa State defeated Sam Houston State, 82-56, as Megan Taylor scored 27 points and Desiree Francis had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Cyclones (5-1).

Chamique Holdsclaw scored only 12 points in No. 3 Tennessee’s 74-60 victory over No. 16 Duke in the Honda 4 Holiday Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Fla., but that was enough for her to tie Bridgette Gordon as the Lady Volunteers’ all-time scoring leader with 2,450 points. . . . Coach Carolyn Peck used 13 players and 12 of them scored as No. 4 Purdue (5-1) routed Ball State, 103-58, in the Big Four Classic at Terre Haute, Ind. Stephanie White-McCarty had 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for Purdue. . . . Kelly Miller scored 20 points and twin sister Coco had 18 to lead No. 5 Georgia (6-0) to an 80-71 victory over host Stephen F. Austin in the Conoco Classic championship game at Nacogdoches, Texas.

Penn State reserve Lisa Shepherd, a three-point specialist, scored nearly half her 21 points on drives as the Lady Lions (5-1) recorded a 77-73 victory over No. 7 Alabama (6-1) to win the championship of the Wachovia Women’s Invitational tournament at Richmond, Va. In the consolation game, No. 8 Old Dominion (6-1) extended Richmond’s losing streak in its own tournament to five years with a 104-97 victory. Richmond (1-6) has also lost 14 in a row to Old Dominion. . . . Angie Braziel scored a season-high 26 points as No. 14 Texas Tech recorded a 79-57 victory over host Rice (4-4) in the championship game of the Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational at Houston. The loss ended a 19-game home winning streak for Rice. . . . Nitra Perry had 19 points and 13 rebounds as Mississippi State (6-0, 1-0) notched a 71-66 victory over No. 20 Vanderbilt (3-3, 0-1) in a Southeastern Conference game at Starkville, Miss. . . . Nicole Kubik scored 21 of her 25 points in the second half as No. 23 Nebraska (7-1) rallied from 18 points down to win, 82-74, over Creighton (2-2) at Omaha, Neb. Creighton scored the game’s first 11 points.
