Quarterback Kyle Boller’s incredible journey through Southern Section Division III defenses and the state record book is nearly over.

The championship game against St. Paul on Saturday at College of the Canyons will end his single, astonishing season under center for Hart High. Boller realizes what a short, sweet ride it’s been.

“I remember the first game like it happened this morning,” he said. “Now it’s already the last game. It’s been a fun season because the team is so close. It’s cool that we’re so team-oriented.”

Boller needs 313 yards passing to become the first player in the state to reach 5,000 and he needs four touchdown passes to break the record of 61 set this season by Robert De La Cruz of Cathedral.

“The last thing I want to do is think about that stuff,” he said. “Our goal all season was to reach this game and we need to focus on what it takes to win.”

With Jerry Owens, Boller’s most dangerous target, out because of a broken leg, the Hart running game must be effective to keep the St. Paul defense honest.

That’s were running back Billy Brecht comes in.

While not a breakaway threat, the short, stocky Brecht is a punishing runner who breaks tackles through sheer determination. He has 758 yards and six touchdowns in 93 carries, 8.2 yards per rush, and is third on the team with 49 receptions and five touchdowns.

“We all need to be totally ready and firing on all cylinders,” Brecht said. “The line has been blocking great for me and I plan to run, block and catch the ball. Just do my job, basically.”
