Tustin Beats Bell Gardens on Rucker’s Overtime Shot

Tustin’s Latoya Rucker made an eight-foot jump shot with 40 seconds left in overtime to clinch a 63-61 victory over Bell Gardens in the Santa Ana Valley girls’ basketball tournament Friday.

Rucker scored 14 points and Brook Brown scored 26 for Tustin (2-5). Celina Robles scored 20 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Bell Gardens. Tustin advances to play Artesia at noon today at Santa Ana Valley.

In the Fountain Valley girls’ basketball tournament:

Irvine 59, Sonora 45--Jody Carlson scored 25 points and had 18 rebounds to lead Irvine (5-2) to a third-round victory. Brandi Davis scored 21 points for Sonora.

In the South Coast Classic:

El Toro 63, Santa Margarita 38--The Chargers turned in a strong performance in beating Sea View League-rival Santa Margarita in a semifinal. Giuliana Mendiola had 21 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Gioconda Mendiola had 19 points and seven assists.

University 61, Torrance 59--Fala Suiaunoa scored 35 points for University (2-2) to set a tournament record. San Bernardino’s Lacresha Flannigan scored 34 points in 1996. Torrance missed two free throws with seven seconds left to hand University the consolation semifinal victory.

In the Burbank Burroughs boys’ soccer tournament:

Servite 5, Arcadia 2--Matt Terry scored three goals and Jeff and Brian Murphy each scored one in the quarterfinals for Servite (3-1-1).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Buena Park 4, Magnolia 2--Alejandro Ramos scored three goals and David Perez scored one for Buena Park (3-2). Magnolia is 1-2.

Century 1, Tustin 0--Sergio Bustos scored on a corner kick in the 26th minute of the game. Francisco Orosco had his second shutout of the season making three saves for Century (3-0-1).

Edison 1, Santa Ana 1--Diego Mejia, who was assisted by Juan Lopez, scored first for Santa Ana (2-0-2) in the 45th minute. Edison’s Danny Collins tied the score from about 10 yards in the 75th minute. Edison is 4-0-1.

Laguna Hills 2, Foothill 1--Antoni Jurica scored on a header in the 57th minute to lift host Laguna Hills (2-1-1). Ryan Johnson’s goal on a breakaway tied the score five minutes earlier for the Hawks. Foothill (3-2-1) took the lead in the first half on Steve Adams’ goal.

Marina 3, Canyon 2--Chet Simmons, Juan Espinoza and Ryan Parker scored in the first half to give Marina a 3-1 halftime lead. Canyon (2-3-1) threatened with a goal by David Gonzales in the 67th minute, but Joseph Hughes preserved the lead for Marina (3-3) by making six saves in the second half.

Mater Dei 1, Santa Margarita 0--Chase Bastian’s goal with six minutes left was the difference for Mater Dei at UC Irvine.

Troy 2, Valencia 1--Ryan Howes scored 10 minutes into the second half to tie the score for Troy, then Ben Reneau scored the winner with an assist from Jordan Oliver. Brett Brown made three saves for the shutout. Valencia (0-4-1) took the lead on Rigo Flores’ goal in the first half.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

El Toro 6, Fountain Valley 1--Kristin Miller scored two goals and goalkeeper Tammy Holtzclaw had three saves and six steals for host El Toro. Kathy Chow had 14 saves, including two blocks of four-meter penalty shots for Fountain Valley (2-5).
