Alemany Starts Over, Wins at Full Strength

For the record, Alemany High won its first game in five tries.

But to the Indians, their 66-48 victory over Littlerock in the first round of the Valencia tournament Monday was merely a season opener, leaving them undefeated entering a quarterfinal game Wednesday against Birmingham.

“Remember, we’re 1-0, not 1-4,” first-year Coach Darryl McDonald said.

Two weeks ago, Alemany lost four games in the Saugus tournament by a combined 87 points.

But those games were played without key players Devin Montgomery, Reggie Kinlaw, Casey Clausen, Bryson Atkins, Marco Pantoja, and Derrick Goodman, who were busy leading Alemany’s football team to the Southern Section Division III semifinals.

The football players combined to score 35 points against Littlerock (4-2), which entered the game with a four-game winning streak.

It was the Alemany basketball debut for Montgomery, Kinlaw and Atkins, who last summer transferred from San Fernando after McDonald was hired as coach.

Junior guard Reny Maynard led all scorers with 19 points, including 13 in the first half, when Alemany overcame a 14-8 deficit to claim a 41-27 halftime lead.

Montgomery finished with 13 points and nine assists.

Gene Myvett scored 12 points and Tony Mayes added 11 for Littlerock. The Lobos outrebounded the Alemany, 44-18, but committed 25 turnovers and made five of 23 free throws.
