SOUTHERN OREGON (6-5) at UC IRVINE (3-5), 7:30 p.m., KUCI-FM (88.9)--Irvine’s 82-75 victory over Brigham Young on Tuesday was either a defining moment or just a night when everything went right. The Anteater freshmen had their best game as a group. Guard Jerry Green held off a BYU charge, scoring 16 of his team-high 22 points in the last 12 minutes. Guard Zamiro Bennem looked dangerous on offense and smothered BYU leading scorer Mark Bigelow on defense. Guard Gabe Cagewin drained two big three-pointers. Center Mark Gottschalk gave the Anteaters some presence inside. Irvine has also benefited from the return of junior forward Adam Stetson, whose hard-nosed play set the tone. Southern Oregon, a NAIA Division II school, should be perfect fodder for a follow-up victory. Tom Chips, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, averages 14 points to lead the Raiders.
