* County connections: Josh Hochgesang of Sunny Hills, Justin Dunning of University, Jeff Pashalides of Woodbridge, Chris Collins of Santa Margarita.
* Worth noting: Hochgesang, the third baseman on last year’s team that won the NCAA West Regional and reached the College World Series, has been slowed by a bruised thumb this season. He batted .365 with 17 home runs and 77 runs batted in last year. Dunning and Pashalides are on the pitching staff for the Cardinal, ranked No. 1 in the nation in preseason polls.
