Newbury Park Is a Goal(ie) Better

Corey Palmieri swam up from her goalie position and scored from 20 yards out with 16 seconds remaining to give Newbury Park High a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over Malibu in a Marmonte League water polo game Monday.

The Panthers (16-7, 8-3) trailed, 6-4, heading into the final quarter, but Ryanne Prins and Katy Fick each scored a pair of goals to draw Newbury Park even, 8-8. Prins finished with three goals and Palmieri had 15 saves.

Royal 3, Thousand Oaks 2--Carly Huffman scored at the end of a fast break 20 seconds into the fourth quarter to lift the Highlanders (12-8, 10-2) past the Lancers in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Community Park.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Providence 50, Oakwood 32--Alina Tech scored 16 points and Patty Aguirre added 11 for Providence (19-1, 12-0) as the Pioneers clinched at least a tie for the school’s first Liberty League title in girls’ basketball.

Alemany 84, Flintridge Sacred Heart 36--Kate Beckler scored 13 of her 24 points in a 32-point first quarter for Alemany (19-6, 8-1) in a Mission League game.

Buena 54, Oxnard 35--Top-ranked Buena (21-2, 12-0) played without starters Renae Hofmann and Karen McAleney, but got 16 points and 14 rebounds from freshman Nicole Greathouse in a Channel League game at Ventura High.

Hofmann was out with flu and McAleney suffered a bruised spine in the Bulldogs’ loss Saturday at Brea Olinda.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Buena 72, San Marcos 68--Danny Thompson scored five of his seven points in overtime, and Buena (4-20, 1-11) scored the first seven points of the extra period and held on to upset San Marcos (19-5, 9-4) in a Channel League game at Buena. Ryan Fay had 29 points for Buena.

Oxnard 72, Hueneme 71--Jeff Fouchey sank a free throw with seven seconds remaining to give Oxnard (15-8, 9-4) a Channel League victory at home.

Carlos Bailey came off the bench for a season-high 25 points for Hueneme (7-14, 9-4), which outscored Oxnard by 10 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Royal 2, Westlake 1--Evan Kay scored 13 minutes into overtime off an assist from Jake Van Sloten, allowing Royal (18-6-3, 8-3-2) to clinch second place in the Marmonte League with a victory.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Monroe 2, Poly 1--Claudia Contreras scored on a rebound of a Liz Nemeth shot that caromed off the goalpost in the final minute, giving Monroe (10-1, 8-0) its second consecutive Mid-Valley League title.

Ventura 5, Hueneme 0--Lindsay Shull had two goals and Mandy Enfield and Kitty Sexton each had a goal and two assists for Ventura (13-8-1, 8-3-1) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

Westlake 4, Camarillo 1--Megan Daly scored in the 34th and 38th minutes to spark a three-goal spurt in a four-minute span for Westlake (15-3-2, 9-1-2) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.
