Wolverines Earn Share of Title

Fred Post scored on a follow shot after a free kick by teammate Zach Schwartz in the 55th minute to lift the Harvard-Westlake High boys’ soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Crespi in a Mission League finale Friday at Crespi.

Post’s goal, his fourth of the season, gave the Wolverines (17-6, 10-2) a share of the league championship. Harvard-Westlake tied for first with two-time defending champion Loyola, which beat third-place Notre Dame, 2-0, in another game Friday.

Although Harvard-Westlake tied for the title, the Wolverines will enter the playoffs as the league’s No. 2 team because of two losses to Loyola.

Harvard-Westlake’s shutout of Crespi (10-11-2, 6-6) was the Wolverines’ fifth of the season.

Loyola 2, Notre Dame 0--Shaun Mutch scored in the 20th minute and his brother Trevor Mutch scored in the 50th minute as the league co-champion Cubs (23-3, 10-2) shut out third-place Notre Dame (10-7-3, 7-4-1) in the Mission League match at Loyola.

Buena 3, Rio Mesa 1--Super Ramirez’s goal off a defender on a scramble in the 50th minute broke a 1-1 tie en route to the Bulldogs (14-4-5, 7-4-3) taking the Channel League’s third and final automatic Southern Section playoff berth at Rio Mesa.

David Cervantes scored on a header in the 45th minute for Rio Mesa (13-6-4, 7-4-3), which must hope for an at-large bid to make the playoffs.

Royal 3, Westlake 2--Jake Van Sloten scored the decisive goal in the 38th minute, giving Royal (19-6-3, 9-3-2) a 3-1 halftime lead and the Highlanders held off the Warriors (10-10-1, 5-8-1) in the second half of the Marmonte League game at Royal.

El Camino Real 3, Cleveland 1--Jimmy Choto scored two goals for host El Camino Real in the Northwest Valley Conference match.

Kellen McLaughin scored the other goal for the Conquistadores (14-4-2, 11-1-1), who clinched the conference title with the victory.

Kennedy 2, San Fernando 2--Greg Avila scored the tying goal for Kennedy (10-5-9, 4-3-7) off Camaron Damwijk’s free kick in the Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Palmdale 1, Highland 0--Anthony Valentino scored in the first half to give the host Falcons (16-7-2, 7-1-2) a share of the Golden League title.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Westlake 7, Royal 0--Meghan Daly had three goals and Lauren Loftus had two for the second-place Warriors (17-3-2, 11-1-2) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

St. Bonaventure 4, Bishop Diego 0--Erin Croasman scored twice and goalkeeper Nicki Ridout recorded her 18th shutout for the Seraphs (20-2-1, 9-1), who clinched their third consecutive Tri-Valley League title at St. Bonaventure.

Oak Park 3, La Reina 1--Katie Patterson’s second goal of the game broke a 1-1 tie for Oak Park (10-8-2, 8-2), which clinched second place with the Tri-Valley League victory at La Reina.

Moorpark 3, Calabasas 0--Julie Nilsen had three assists, two on goals by Erin Fidani, to help Moorpark (7-11-1, 7-2-1) finish second in the Frontier League at Calabasas.

Despite the loss, Calabasas (7-1-2 in league) is the Frontier League champion.

Cleveland 8, Canoga Park 0--Brynne Blumstein scored four goals for Cleveland in the West Valley League match at Canoga Park.

Chaminade 6, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Kim Taylor had three goals and two assists for Chaminade (22-2-1, 9-1) in a Mission League game at St. Francis High.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Louisville 19, Alemany 1--Kim Feig, Paloma Slezak and Katie Pyle each scored four goals for Louisville (19-2, 6-2) in a Mission League game.
