Modifications Needed to Convert Base’s Pool

An Olympic-size swimming pool at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center requires some safety modifications before it can open for community use, a city councilwoman said this week.

The shallowest point of the 50-meter pool is 5 feet, raising concerns about offering swimming lessons to children as young as 3, City Councilwoman Alice Jempsa said.

She suggested removable platforms at the bottom of the pool to reduce the standing height to 3 or 4 feet.

“I think that would resolve something that was of tremendous concern to me,” she said.

Working with the military, the U.S. Olympic Water Polo team and surrounding communities, Los Alamitos is considering revamping the pool to alleviate crowded community swimming classes at Los Alamitos High School.

The water polo team trained at the base pool before the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta.
