Lua Leads No. 6 Tustin Past Woodbridge

Carlos Lua scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter to help Tustin break open a close game and defeat Woodbridge, 72-61, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Monday at Tustin High.

Cameron Jackson scored 17 for Tustin (13-3), the sixth-ranked team in Orange County, which outscored Woodbridge, 17-8, in the third quarter.

In other nonleague games:

Kennedy 67, La Mirada 51--Tony Jimmerson had 19 points and 11 rebounds for visiting Kennedy (9-7).

Magnolia 66, La Quinta 50--Zamiro Bennem scored 26 points and Erik McGhee added 20 for visiting Magnolia.

Newport Harbor 61, Saddleback 41--Junior Gary Robinson scored 13 points for visiting Newport Harbor (11-5). Derrick Barnes scored a game-high 19 points for Saddleback (5-11).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

No. 7 Laguna Hills 4, Edison 3--Robby Balogh, Bryan Doi, Abdul Mazid and Aaron Hurst scored first-half goals for the Hawks (11-3-2). Jason Clifford scored twice for Edison (9-3-1).

Huntington Beach 5, Costa Mesa 2--Huntington Beach senior Aaron McAthy tied the school record for career goals, notching his 40th in the second half for the visiting Oilers (5-5-1). McAthy is tied with Rick Bell, who scored 40 goals from 1979-81.

Estancia 1, Newport Harbor 1--Newport Harbor’s Trey Meek scored the tying goal in the 65th minute after Estancia had two players ejected with red cards. Jose Quintana scored a first-half goal for host Estancia (7-3-2).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

El Modena 2, Laguna Hills 1--Vicki Bloom scored once and assisted on Ashley Clift’s goal for host El Modena (3-7-1).

No. 9 El Toro 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Jaimi Doddridge scored in the 45th minute off a pass from Melissa Dippel to break a scoreless tie for visiting El Toro (6-3-1).

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Dana Hills 14, University 3--Dana Tucker scored six goals for host Dana Hills (10-3), which led, 7-0, after one quarter.

El Dorado 12, El Modena 2--Tawny Tivenan scored seven goals for host El Dorado (6-8).
