Volunteer Cleanup Is Scheduled at Dog Beach

Nearly 200 volunteers are expected to clean up Dog Beach this weekend as part of a citizens group’s effort to keep the beach open.

The cleanup is part of a strategy to increase community awareness, said Martin Senat, founder of the Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach.

The group was formed last month after city officials warned that the beach could be closed because dog owners failed to pick up after their animals and allowed the pets to roam freely.

Senat said that the group is working toward educating the public about city regulations by displaying signs on the beach, by patrolling and cleaning the area, and by holding monthly meetings with volunteers and city officials.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the closest parking lot to Dog Beach, just south of Bolsa Chica State Beach.
