“It was a very special moment,” Krayzelburg, born in Odessa but a U.S. resident since 1989, said of standing on the podium.

“While I was growing up in Russia everyone wanted to be in the United States, so it’s special to be an American and standing on top of the world.”

FOOTBALL

No progress: The Cal State Northridge search and screening committee for hiring the school’s next football coach met Thursday but did not select any finalists.

Paul Bubb, Northridge’s athletic director, said the group discussed the applicants and will meet Wednesday to possibly trim the list to the top candidates.

“We are continuing to review applications,” Bubb said.

Bubb said he received several more applications Thursday, raising the number to about 30. He said interviews with the finalists likely will start Jan. 26.

The Northridge job opened Jan. 5 when Jim Fenwick resigned to become offensive coordinator at New Mexico. He coached the Matadors for one season.

BOXING

Ventura bouts: Junior- lightweight Eddie Contreras of Santa Paula will fight Mike Dallas of Bakersfield in a 10-round lightweight main event Jan. 29 at Ventura Fairgrounds.

The card marks the return of monthly boxing to Ventura County. Bouts will be scheduled on the third Thursday of each month, Oxnard promoter Robert Valdez said. Valdez promoted two shows in the county last year.

The undercard is scheduled to include several local boxers, including flyweight Carlos Madrigal of Oxnard.

Noted ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. is scheduled to host the program.
