Guess What They Said for the Group Photo?

You can call it the “Invasion of the Cheeseheads,” and San Diego is their destination.

About 20 Green Bay Packer fans decked out in green and gold, along with about 5,000 of the foam hats shaped like wedges of cheese, left the snow and cold of Milwaukee on Thursday in the “Cheesehead Car-avan” bound for the Super Bowl game on Jan. 25.

After a send-off of soda and bratwurst, the car-avan was escorted by police cars from Foamation Inc., the company that markets the cheeseheads and other novelty items.

Add cheeseheads: Tom Simons, a police detective, was wearing an old motorcycle helmet in Green Bay’s colors with a revolving green-and-gold light on top. Despite his appearance, he almost sounded philosophical in describing his motivation.

“It’s the love of the Green Bay Packers and the love of fellow man, to show that we are family,” he said. “It’s a brotherhood.”

Trivia time: Which team holds the record for most yards from scrimmage in a Super Bowl?

*

Is that all? In case you were wondering just how much money professional football is going to reap under the new television contracts, the NFL will receive an average of more than $6 million a day, 365 days a year, for the next eight years.

Bashing Barry: Many Texans welcomed Barry Switzer’s departure as coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Joseph “Milwaukee Joe” Libowsky, for instance, had developed a new flavor for his ice-cream stores in Fort Worth and New Bedford. It’s a pink concoction of chopped nuts and cranberry flavoring called “Canberry Switzer.”

Faulty logic: Why did the Indianapolis Colts hire retread coach Jim Mora, 62, instead of a prominent assistant?

Owner Jim Irsay told Newsday’s Bob Glauber that it’s because they plan to draft either Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf with the No. 1 pick.

“If we get that young quarterback--and the odds are we will, even though a blockbuster trade could occur--it’s very important that we didn’t pair a rookie coach with a rookie quarterback,” Irsay said.

Glauber’s response: “C’mon. Didn’t rookie coach Jim Fassel work pretty well with first-year starter Danny Kanell? He sure did a better job than retread Mike Ditka did with Heath Shuler or Dick Vermeil with Tony Banks.”

Double standard: On MSNBC’s “News Chat,” Yankee owner George Steinbrenner was discussing the end of the sitcom “Seinfeld,” in which he was portrayed as George Costanza’s boss.

Said Steinbrenner: “If you can’t laugh at yourself and have others laughing at you, it’s pretty sad. Now that doesn’t apply to my players. They are not allowed to laugh at me.”

For the record: Dallas Star winger Pat Verbeek had compiled 2,362 penalty minutes through the 1996-97 season. The number was incorrect in Friday’s editions.

Looking back: On this day in 1971, rookie Jim O’Brien kicked a 32-yard field goal with five seconds remaining to give the Baltimore Colts a 16-13 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

Trivia answer: Washington, 602 yards against Denver in Super Bowl XXII.

And finally: Denver quarterback John Elway, 37, a 15-year NFL veteran, vividly recalls his NFL debut, stepping to the line and seeing Pittsburgh Steeler linebacker Jack Lambert:

“He had no teeth, and he was slobbering all over. I’m thinking, ‘You can have your money back, just get me out of here, let me go be an accountant.’ I can’t even tell you how badly I wanted out of there.”
