Celtics Retire Parish’s No. 00
The last of the Celtics’ Big Three of the 1980s had his number retired when Robert Parish’s “00” was raised to the ceiling Sunday in Boston.
Parish was joined at center court before a roaring crowd by former front-line mates Larry Bird, in his first game in Boston as coach of the Indiana Pacers, and Kevin McHale, vice president of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
“You have supported me when I was playing well, when I wasn’t playing well,” Parish told the crowd. “When I was with another team, you still supported me unconditionally.”
Parish, who helped the Celtics to three NBA titles before leaving as a free agent after the 1993-94 season, retired as a Chicago Bull in 1997. He played 21 seasons and more games, 1,611, than any player in NBA history.
