Kula Shaker, which gave an unannounced performance Tuesday at the Viper Room, is in town working on a new album with Rick Rubin and George Drakoulious (Black Crowes, the Jayhawks) co-producing. . . .

The Offspring will headline the fifth annual Board Aid music and extreme winter sports event March 15 at Bear Mountain at Big Bear Lake, benefiting the LifeBeat AIDS organization. Also set to perform are Steel Pulse and One Hit Wonder. The four past Board Aids have raised more than $470,000. . . .

The Best Buy chain, which made a deal for special exclusive releases of some material from the BBC broadcast library, has a CD of live Roy Orbison material coming out to mark the late musician’s lifetime achievement award being presented at the Grammys next month. Among the tracks is a performance of the Beatles’ “Help.” . . . Chris Isaak is in L.A. mixing tracks for his next album, due April 14. . . .

The Presidents of the United States of America’s final album, “Pure Frosting,” a collection of new songs, live tracks, B-sides and rarities comes out March 10. The band, set to do its final concert Friday at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre, has also done the title song for the Disney TV movie “My Date With the President’s Daughter,” airing in April. . . .

Stabbing Westward is finishing a new album, “Darkest Days,” with producer Dave Jerden (Jane’s Addiction, Alice in Chains), with cover art by Dave McKean (“The Preacher” comic books).
