Pacoima Teen Turns Self In in Gun Death

A 15-year-old Pacoima boy, wanted in connection with the drive-by shooting death of a Monroe High School student after a football game last November, surrendered to police Monday morning, authorities said.

Tony Burnette Shaw arrived at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire station about 11:45 a.m. with his mother and several family friends, said Det. Mike Oppelt.

Shaw is being held without bail at Juvenile Hall in Sylmar, Oppelt said.

Police obtained a murder warrant and released Shaw’s name and photo at a news conference Friday, an unusual move because Shaw is a minor. Detectives said they were contacted Sunday by Shaw’s mother, who said she would bring her son in the next day.

Oppelt said he wasn’t surprised that Shaw turned himself in, which was the reason for the publicity. “It sends up a message that this is a very serious matter,” he said. “He did the right thing.”

Police said Shaw, an admitted Pacoima gang member, is suspected of shooting Ricky Evans, 15, as Evans and his friends walked home from the playoff game between Monroe and Crenshaw high schools Nov. 21.

Shaw was allegedly one of four teenagers in a white Cadillac that pulled up behind a group of eight students walking north on Aqueduct Avenue about 9:30 p.m.

Someone yelled out the familiar gang inquiry “Where are you from?”

When some in the group answered “nowhere,” shots rang out from inside the car. Evans was hit twice in the chest.

The three other teenagers in the car will not face charges in the shooting, Oppelt said.
