Sanchez’s Layup Keeps Regals Ahead of Pack

Nicole Sanchez’s layup with eight seconds to play lifted Cal Lutheran to a 65-64 victory over Pomona-Pitzer in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Pomona-Pitzer.

Cal Lutheran (9-6, 5-0 in conference play) moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Pomona-Pitzer (11-5, 3-1), which led, 54-41, with 10:00 to play. The Regals took their first lead, 59-58, on a basket by Lexi Miller with 4:05 to play.

Pomona-Pitzer moved ahead, 64-63, on two free throws by Adrienne Davis with 20 seconds to play. Sanchez, who didn’t start but led Cal Lutheran with 12 points, scored on a pass from Miller. Miller finished with six points.

In other women’s games:

Cal State Northridge 86, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 75--Lisa Vaillancourt and Edniesha Curry each scored 17 points for the Matadors in a nonconference victory at Northridge that was decided in double-overtime.

Tannea Nelson had 13 points and Tammie Mills added 11 for Northridge (9-8), which led, 36-22, at halftime before being outscored, 39-25, in the second half.

Point Loma Nazarene 94, The Master’s 75--Elizabeth Hansell had 32 points and 10 rebounds, and Reesie Gorman scored 10 points for host Master’s (5-16) in a nonconference game.

Ember Brown had 31 points and 10 rebounds for Point Loma Nazarene (8-11), which outscored the Mustangs, 58-42, in the second half.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Riverside 66, The Master’s 62--Jerome Joseph had 19 points while reserve Brian Wilson scored 12 and grabbed 10 rebounds for visiting Master’s (16-8) in a nonconference game.

Kenyth Henry and James Giacomazzi each scored 17 points for UC Riverside (13-5).

BASEBALL

The Master’s 12, Westmont 0--Rob Avila had a double, home run and drove in four runs, and Jason Freeman had a home run and four runs batted in for the Mustangs in a nonconference opener at The Master’s.
