Woman Alleges Phillips Punched Her

Lawrence Phillips, whose football career has been plagued by violent outbursts, is under investigation for allegedly punching a woman in the face at a suburban nightclub, Miami police said Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Miami Dolphin running back hit the woman after she refused to dance with him, according to police in Plantation, about 20 miles north of Miami.

The police report said he told the woman, “I’ll break your jawbone and pull the weave out of your head.”

The alleged victim, Michelle Black of West Palm Beach, chipped a tooth, cut her lip and later told officers she temporarily blacked out. She was treated and released at a hospital in Plantation.

Kenny Brunner, former Georgetown and Fresno State basketball player, appeared with another man at a preliminary hearing in Los Angeles Municipal Court, where they were ordered to stand trial on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery.

Brunner and Ladale Lunney, a student at Los Angeles City College, were arrested May 23 for allegedly robbing L.A. City College basketball Coach Mike Miller at gunpoint. Their trial is scheduled July 14.

A Kentucky football player has been charged with shoplifting and disorderly conduct in separate cases.

Andre Hayslip was charged with shoplifting June 21 at Lexington, Ky., and has pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge. He has a preliminary hearing set for July 7. Hayslip also was arrested early Sunday and charged with disorderly conduct after allegedly punching another man.

Benny Silman, 27, the alleged mastermind of Arizona State’s basketball point-shaving scandal in 1994, was sentenced to 46 months in prison, four months more than the government had sought.

Taj “Red” McDavid, the former high school star passed over in the 1996 NBA draft, became the first prep player to regain his NCAA eligibility. McDavid, a 6-foot-6 forward from Williamston, S.C., must sit out a year, the NCAA ruled, then gets three years to play at Anderson College in South Carolina.

Washington and Baltimore announced they would make a joint bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

The University of Louisville reassigned assistant basketball coach Carlton “Scooter” McCray, making him special assistant to Athletic Director Tom Jurich. A standout player for the Cardinals, McCray was at the center of alleged NCAA violations as a coach.

In a letter of inquiry released in April, the NCAA cited the Louisville basketball program for arrangements McCray made in 1996 to keep player Nate Johnson’s father from being evicted from a Louisville hotel.

The Cincinnati Bengals are considering former New York Jet quarterback Neil O’Donnell as a possible backup for starter Jeff Blake.
