Chicago Cub outfielder Sammy Sosa said that he will be unable to participate in the All-Star Game or the home run hitting contest because of a sore left shoulder.

Sosa, who set a single month record with 20 home runs in June, said he woke up Sunday with soreness in the back of his shoulder which he thinks was caused by sleeping awkwardly on it. He was scratched from Sunday’s lineup.

“If I don’t play today, I don’t think I’ll be available [today],” said Sosa, the Cubs’ lonerepresentative on the National League team.

Greg Maddux may be in line to start the All-Star game for the second year in a row when the managers announce their lineups today.

Maddux leads the majors with a 1.54 earned-run average and is tied for the lead with 12 victories. The Atlanta ace last pitched Thursday, meaning it wouldn’t hurt him to work a couple of innings Tuesday night.
