Ferrone Trades Scouting Book for San Bernardino Uniform

Former Crespi High player Joe Ferrone, a scout for the Dodgers, will serve as the first base coach for the next two months at Class-A San Bernardino, the Dodgers’ California League affiliate. The new San Bernardino manager is former longtime major league third baseman Tim Wallach, who replaced Mickey Hatcher when Hatcher became the Dodgers’ batting coach two weeks ago.

Gary Matthews Jr. (Granada Hills, Mission College) made a splash in his return to the lineup of the Mobile Bay Bears, hitting a two-run home run. Matthews, a switch-hitter who is on the San Diego Padres’ 40-man roster, was out for six weeks with a sprained right wrist. The son of former longtime major league outfielder Gary Matthews is batting .379.

Jacksonville outfielder Gabe Kapler (Taft, Moorpark College), Mobile first baseman Mike Mitchell (Rio Mesa) and Shreveport catcher Frank Charles (Montclair Prep) are scheduled to play tonight in the joint Double-A All-Star game at New Haven.

David Lamb (Newbury Park) also was selected for the game, but will not play because he was promoted recently to triple-A by the Baltimore Orioles.

The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Cruz, who was three for four with four RBIs, is batting .308. . . . Mike Rossiter (Burroughs) pitched one scoreless inning in relief for Las Vegas, lowering his earned-run average to 2.79. . . . First baseman Nate Dishington (Hoover) was one for three for Memphis and is batting .412 in 17 at-bats since the St. Louis Cardinals promoted him from double-A Arkansas.

Class-A--Catcher David Skeels (Thousand Oaks) was three for four with two RBIs for Visalia in a 6-1 victory over Rancho Cucamonga. . . . Catcher Jon Schaeffer (Harvard-Westlake) was three for four with a home run and two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring three, for Fort Wayne. Schaeffer, a Midwest League all-star, improved his average to .288. . . . Chris MacMillan (Cal State Northridge) was three for four and drove in two runs for Watertown.

Rookie--Designated hitter Casey Cheshier (Highland, Northridge) doubled and singled, and shortstop Junior Brignac (Cleveland) stole his fourth base for Eugene. . . . Johnson City outfielder Darren Dyt (Northridge) was two for three, raising his average to .369.
