Volleyball Tour Returns to Seal Beach

Share

After a two-year absence, the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals will be back in Seal Beach today when the $50,000 AVP Open at Seal Beach gets under way.

This is the 13th year the AVP Tour has stopped at Seal Beach, an annual tournament site from 1984 to 1995. The fact that it is in Southern California, where there are two other tour stops, was one of the reasons Seal Beach lost the tournament.

“The AVP has 21 tournaments, so there can only be so many Southern California events,” AVP spokesman Will Bortz said. “Lake Tahoe had a stop last year, and San Francisco had one two years ago. Demand took it elsewhere.”

Also returning to Seal Beach will be a highly ranked Mike Whitmarsh team.

Whitmarsh teamed with Mike Dodd to win the AVP Open at Seal Beach from 1993 to 1995.

This year, Whitmarsh has 11-year veteran Kent Steffes as his partner.

The two are seeded second behind Adam Johnson and Karch Kiraly. The double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday.
