Chansawangpuvana Advances Into 2 National Finals
Mike Chansawangpuvana of Orange continued to roll through the U.S. Junior National Badminton Championships, advancing to the finals in two events, Saturday at the Orange County Badminton Club.
Chansawangpuvana, playing unseeded in the under-14 division, upset second-seeded Adam Scholl of Manhattan Beach, 15-7, 15-1, in boys’ singles. Chansawangpuvana will face top-seeded Eric Go in today’s championship.
Chansawangpuvana will also play in the boys’ doubles championship with partner Nick Mangkalakiri, also from Orange. Third-seeded Chansawangpuvana and Mangkalakiri advanced with a 15-4, 15-7 victory over Matt Sakulrattanakorn and Jeffrey Soonlan.
The only other county player to advance to a final is Orange’s May Mangkalakiri. She and Arcadia’s Elie Wu upset third-seeded Kristin Artman and Erin Hois 15-4, 15-3, in the girls’ doubles under-19 division. Mangkalakiri and Wu will play second-seeded Amy Nguy and Casey Peters in the final.
