Police Investigate Incident of Player Hitting Official

Police are investigating an incident in which an Alemany High boys’ basketball player allegedly punched a referee during a summer basketball game last week at L.A. Baptist High.

The player struck official Dave White following a foul call during a summer league game last Wednesday, LAPD Det. Kevin Jenks said.

White, who serves as a pastor in Valencia, is the son of former Canyon High principal Bill White.

Robert Gebauer, Alemany’s vice principal, said Tuesday the player is facing disciplinary action from the school.

The Southern Section office in Cerritos is expected to receive a report on the incident.

BASEBALL

Brian Horwitz of Crespi High helped the national team win the gold medal at the International Baseball Assn. World Youth Championships in Fairview Heights, Ill.

The USA squad defeated Chinese Taipei, 11-10, in the final Sunday.

Horwitz finished with a .481 batting average and led the team with 12 runs batted in. He was voted top center fielder in the tournament.

Matt Harrington of Palmdale had a 1-0 record and 19 strikeouts in nine innings.

FOOTBALL

Alemany High, continuing to show improvement under second-year Coach Jim Bonds, won the Cal Lutheran passing tournament Saturday, defeating Carlsbad in the final.

The Indians, who have not been a factor in local summer competitions since the days of Richard Dice and Terry Barnum, were led by junior quarterback Casey Clausen.

Mike Adams, a redshirt freshman quarterback from Boston University, has transferred to Valley College.

Adams, 6 feet 2 and 230 pounds, played high school football in Oakland before attending Boston University, which recently dropped football.

Adams is expected to become the leading candidate to start at quarterback for the Monarchs this fall.

GOLF

College of the Canyons is holding its annual tournament to benefit the baseball team on Aug. 24 at Valencia Country Club. Cost is $175.

WATER POLO

Rick Solomon has been selected coach at Crespi for the second time. Solomon coached the Celts before competing and coaching in the European professional water polo league.
