Lemmon and Rhames: Act 2?

Share

Will Jack Lemmon again have two chances to win at the Emmy Awards?

In a memorable moment from this year’s Golden Globe Awards, Ving Rhames--who won for his starring role in the HBO movie biography “Don King: Only in America”--beckoned a stunned Lemmon to the stage and handed his award over to him. Rhames said he did so because “Jack has given so much to the world. . . . I’m a better man by watching his work,” and Lemmon called it “one of the nicest, sweetest moments I’ve ever known in my life.”

Sure enough, the just-announced nighttime Emmy nominations again pit Lemmon--for his role in the Showtime movie remake “12 Angry Men”--against Rhames as best actor in a movie or miniseries. (Other nominees in the category are Gary Sinise, Patrick Stewart and Sam Neill, all of whom, unlike Lemmon, have yet to win an Emmy.)

Rhames is currently in London shooting the movie “Entrapment” with Sean Connery and couldn’t be reached. After the Golden Globes, the group that presents those awards issued a second trophy to Rhames, who refused to take back the one he had given Lemmon.

“Don King’s” eight nominations also included one that, given the subject matter, might have been the easiest to predict among this year’s 390 Emmy contenders: best hairstyling.
